“The End” de The Doors es una canción que refleja perfectamente la unión entre música y cine. De hecho, la canción, su música, ha quedado asociada a ‘Apocalypse Now’, de Francis Ford Coppola. El film, que fue grabado en 1979 y obligó a Coppola a hipotecarse para sacar adelante el proyecto, comienza con “The End” de The Doors.
Las imágenes de la guerra de Vietnam llegan a la cabeza del capitán Benjamin L. Willard, interpretado por Martin Sheen. Guerra, destrucción, bombardeos, helicópteros sobrevolando la jungla vietnamita, son los recuerdos que invaden al militar mientras intenta descansar en una habitación de Saigon, antes de que recibir el encargo de buscar y asesinar al disidente coronel Kurtz.
La música de la canción fue convenientemente adaptada. Hay fragmentos sonoros, sonidos de la jungla o de los helicópteros volando, que se incluyen en la adaptación cinematográfica del clásico de The Doors. También se varió la línea vocal original.
El tema que fue incluido en su homónimo disco de debut y fue escrita por Jim Morrison cuando éste finalizó una relación amorosa. La extensión de la canción ha dado para muchas versionesa. Desde la original, cuya duración roza los 12 minutos, a las interminables versiones en directo, pasando por un recorte de minutado para la versión recortada para la edición de los “mejores singles” o la nueva mezcla creada ex profeso para “Apocalypse Now”.
